Former National Champions Bomo Kigigha and Labake Coker emerged top from the pool of top players at the just concluded 37th edition of Nigerian Breweries Plc International Chess Championship.
The seven round Swiss event pairing, which was held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos had World Chess Olympiad veteran, Kigigha return to the summit. A position he last occupied four years ago.
The champion’s defining moment came after his brilliant draw against Grand Master Srirah Jha from India in the penultimate round and was joint first with six points with Ademola Sorungbe but won the tie-break and both players received N275, 000
.
The duo of grand master Jha and Femi Balogun also tied to third position with 5.5 points and received N75, 000 each.
In the female section, Coker extended her dominance in the category by retaining her title. She was involved in a three-way tie of 5.5 points with the duo of Toritsemuwa Ofowino and Omodalewa Akintoye but won on tie break. The trio bagged N108, 3000 for their efforts.
In the Opens category, Joshua Adejoh was the best in the pack with 6.5 points from seven round won a cash prize of N150, 000 while the duo of Edet Udeme and Neseimeye Joma were joint second and won a cash prize of N87, 500 each. It was a three-way tie for top spot in the Amateur category as Jacdonmi Temisan, Tochukwu Akagha and Oladotun Akinseye all have six points out seven rounds and bagged N75, 000 each.
Young prodigy, Emmanuel Akintoye and Toluwanimi Okemakinde are the best in the under 14 boys with a total of 4.5 points and won N45,000 each for their efforts. While Toyosi Bakare, Mathew Thomas, Qosim Olawoyin and Godswill Adara all have four points to win N15,000 each.
