Nigerian man quarantined in Hong Kong tests negative for Ebola

HONG KONG (AFP) – A Nigerian man who was quarantined after he showed Ebola-like symptoms while travelling to Hong Kong has tested negative for the deadly virus.
The southern Chinese city government said in a statement late Sunday that the man, 32, had “tested negative for Ebola virus upon preliminary laboratory testing”.
“In the past one month… he had no contact history with sick persons or animals and did not visit health-care facilities. He is currently in stable condition,” a government spokesman said in the statement.
The man arrived in Hong Kong from Lagos, Nigeria’s most populous city, via Dubai on Thursday and was hospitalized Sunday after vomiting and having diarrhoea.
Concerns are growing over the potential spread of the disease which has claimed nearly 1,000 lives in west Africa this year.
Hong Kong, a densely populated city of some seven million people, is particularly alert to the spread of viruses after Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome killed almost 300 people eleven years ago.
On July 30 the Hong Kong government said it would quarantine as a precaution all people from Ebola infected areas who showed any symptom of the disease such as fever, vomiting or diarrhoea.
Last week a woman who showed Ebola-like symptoms after returning from a holiday in Kenya tested negative for the virus.
Nigeria along with Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia have been hardest hit by the latest epidemic, which the WHO has called the worst outbreak of its kind in four decades.
Nigeria — the most populous nation in Africa — confirmed two new cases Friday of the often fatal hemorrhagic disease, bringing the total number of infections to nine, including two deaths.
The World Health Organization has declared the epidemic an international health emergency, as countries scramble to impose measures to prevent any spread of a contagion that has claimed almost 1,000 lives.

FG confirms 10th Ebola case in Lagos

ABUJA (AFP) – Nigeria on Monday confirmed a new case of Ebola in the financial capital Lagos, bringing the total number of people in the country with the virus to 10.
Health minister Onyebuchi Chukwu said the latest confirmed case was a female nurse who came into contact with a Liberian-American man, Patrick Sawyer, who died of Ebola in a Lagos hospital on July 25.
In addition to Sawyer, another nurse who had contact with him died last week, while seven other people have been confirmed to have the virus in the city, he added.
“The 10th case actually was one of the nurses who also had primary contact with the index case. When he (Sawyer) got ill, we then brought her into isolation,” the minister told a news conference in Abuja.
“We just tested her over the weekend. So, that’s what made it 10. So, between Friday and today we had one additional case. That brings it to 10 and the 10 includes the index case.”
Chukwu said the nurse was currently undergoing treatment while her husband was under surveillance.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday there were 13 probable and suspect cases of Ebola, including two deaths, in Nigeria.
The minister did not comment on the discrepancy in the figures.
The WHO is discussing the possible use of an experimental treatment to try to stem the spread of the deadly virus, which has claimed nearly 1,000 lives in four West African countries this year.
Nigeria has announced a number of measures to curb the spread of Ebola, including the declaration of a national emergency in line with WHO advice to trigger disaster response procedures.
President Goodluck Jonathan has announced greater funding to stop the spread such as setting up additional isolation centres, border screenings and contact tracing.
People in Africa’s most populous nation and leading economy have been told to avoid large gatherings.
The authorities in Lagos, which is sub-Saharan Africa’s largest city, have however appealed for volunteers because of a shortage of medical personnel exacerbated by a month-long doctors’ strike.
The health minister on Monday confirmed that public sector doctors were pressing on with their stoppage after divisions within the National Medical Association union (NMA) created confusion.
NMA boss Kayode Obembe on Thursday announced the suspension of the strike citing the need to help tackle the Ebola crisis.
But other key players in the union refused to follow his directive, saying the government had not met any of their demands. Obembe has reportedly resigned as the NMA president.
The health minister on Monday said he was “pleading” with the union to return to work.
The Nigerian Red Cross Society (NRCS) meanwhile said it had activated all its volunteers to get across preventative measures to the public, particularly seeking early medical advice and treatment.
Secretary-general Bello Hamman Diram said 18 volunteers were assisting in areas such as contact tracing, health promotion, case management and public information schemes.
Some 300 other volunteers will be deployed to help the federal and Lagos State governments in providing protective equipment as well as educational and hygiene materials.

Okagbare: World championships the real test

One of the most poignant memories of the Commonwealth Games came at the end of the women’s 200 metres. Nigerian star Blessing Okagbare had just dismantled the field in 22.25 seconds. In her post-race celebrations, she padded around barefoot to the first row of spectator stands, found a fan who hugged her, gave her a giant Nigerian flag and a high five. That was no ordinary fan. It was the woman who preceded Blessing as the best sprinter in the history of Nigerian athletics, Mary Onyali.Twenty years earlier in Victoria, Canada, Onyali almost did the sprint double at the 1994 Commonwealth Games. She won the 100m and only lost the 200m to a rampaging finish by Australian Cathy Freeman.Dubbed the Queen of Sprints by Nigerians, Onyali raced during a golden age of women’s sprinting. She started making big finals in 1987 at age 19 when she placed sixth in the World Championships 200. Altogether, she raced in nine individual World/Olympic sprint finals, peaking with a bronze medal in the 200m at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.If not for Gail Devers, Gwen Torrence, Irina Privalova and our own terrific trio of Merlene Ottey, Juliet Cuthbert and Grace Jackson, she’d have won so much more. When the 25 year-old Okagbare crossed the line first in the Commonwealth Games 200m, she moved past the retired Onyali by doing the double. Their joint celebration was like the passing of the baton from one generation to another. As was the case with her predecessor, Okagbare’s rivals are formidable. Her improved start will be put to the test in Beijing next year when she will likely face a fit Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce, experienced Veronica Campbell-Brown (VCB), Murielle Ahoure of the Ivory Coast, new US find Tori Bowie and Michelle-Lee Ahye of Trinidad and Tobago and Carmelita Jeter at the World Championships.Bowie and Ahye are worthy new challengers who have run fast times this year. Blessing has the edge on them both since she has run in Olympic and World sprint finals in 2012 and 2013 and has a bronze from the 200 last year in Moscow.Add reigning Olympic champion Allyson Felix to the mix at 200 metres, and sprint fans will lick their lips in anticipation.Only two questions remain. During Onyali’s era, Torrence, Ottey, Jackson, Cuthbert and Privalova all ran the 200m in times faster than 22 seconds. That’s rare these days. Since 2004, only Felix, VCB and Kerron Stewart have broken 22 seconds, with the first two the only ones to cross the threshold more than once. The slim American, Felix, holds a slight edge with five sub-22-second clocking to queen V’s four. It’s a challenge for today’s generation in an age where sprinters seem to have lost interest in the event once called ‘the deuce’.The bigger question is whether Okagbare can crack the Jamaican-American dominance of women’s sprints. VCB, Shelly-Ann, Felix and Jeter have won everything recently. In the big championship seasons of 2015 and 2016, Okagbare will have to be at her best if she wants to be World Queen of Sprints.

I honestly only remember seeing that I had space and went for a shot.”Courtney is the younger sister of Super Eagles striker, Bright. The big striker took to Twitter to congratulate his sibling on her accomplishments in Canada.“Congrats to my sister @CourtneyDike getting her first goal for Nigeria and the fastest U20 World Cup goal in history #DikeFamilyKillingIt,”

Man Who Has Sex With Dead Women In Ebonyi Nabbed By Police

A 20-year-old man, identified simply as Chukwuma, who allegedly specialises in killing women and having sex with their dead bodies in Ebonyi State has been arrested by the police.
Chukwuma who is a painter, was nabbed after the police set him up with a girl along a farm pathway, where he usually waylays women who are either going to or coming back from the farm.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Chris Anyanwu, he had the habit of pouncing on women on lonely bush paths where he strangles them and has sex with their dead bodies, Daily Sun reports.
He said they got information that he had already killed three women in the same way.
Recounting the incidents, Anyanwu said on July 15, he waylayed one Anyigor who went to farm at a place called Okwulike. After strangling her and having sex with her dead body, he robbed her of N8,500, which he found on her.
The suspect said he used the money to buy Nokia handset phone and used the remaining money to drink local gin called ‘kaikai’.
About a week later, he pounced on another woman, Mrs. Helen, 54, who went to Egiagu village to farm. Her dead body was later found by a search party along the lonely farm path.
Related:
Upon interrogation, Chukwuma confessed to the crime, saying he did it because the community people refused to stop calling him a nickname ‘Sogbodo’, which he hated.
He disclosed that he used the N8,500 which he stole from one of his victims to buy Nokia handset phone and used the remaining money to drink local gin called ‘kaikai’
